Islanders open season with 2-1 loss in Toronto

New York lost its September 30 opener to the Maple Leafs, with Emil Heineman scoring shorthanded and Ilya Sorokin making 24 saves. Heineman's energy and chemistry with Bo Horvat were encouraging, but the ineffective power play, limited even-strength offense, net-front issues and Victor Eklund's 11:58 of ice time remain immediate concerns before Saturday's home opener against New Jersey.
