Across the country, city councils, courts, and civilian boards are reexamining how police use force, deploy surveillance tools, and cooperate with ICE. Communities are pressing for transparency through body-camera access, public oversight hearings, independent watchdogs, and reviews of chiefs and departments following shootings, suicides in custody, and rising excessive-force complaints. At the same time, several localities are cutting or limiting data-sharing and resource support for federal immigration enforcement, while others are being criticized for opaque agreements and frequent communication with ICE. Together, these stories show a broad but uneven shift toward stronger oversight, civil-liberties protections, and formal reforms tied to lawsuits, settlements, and consent decrees.
