Early-stage rotating-detonation propulsion research targets hypersonic flight and space access

AFRL’s RDRE-CC notice sets a three-to-four-year goal to move proof-of-concept technology from TRL 3 toward a flight-prototype demonstration. A separate DoW-backed UCF concept proposes a liquid rotating-detonation engine that can shift between air-breathing and rocket modes; neither effort has demonstrated the proposed capability.
