U.S. states and Canada weigh new public support for local journalism

Pennsylvania House bills proposing newsroom fellowships and a civic information fund have advanced to the Senate, with a possible vote in January 2027. Canada’s proposed budget would extend a 35% journalism labor tax credit through 2028, broaden eligibility, and provide $41 million for the Local Journalism Initiative; these and other policy ideas remain proposals, and implementation and durable newsroom benefits are unproven.
