Young, deeper defense offers potential progress

The defense is receiving preseason optimism because of transfer additions, retained contributors and improved depth despite limited returning starters. Mike Tressel's ability to integrate the group, along with the development of linebackers Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano, will determine whether the unit can support a pressured offense.
