Berkeley’s Central Works has closed after 36 years and 81 original plays, adding a major independent-theater loss to pressures from lost grants, venue closures, redevelopment, and institutional disruption. Libraries, UC Berkeley youth programs, Oakland arts governance, Oakland Style, paid theater fellowships, SF Open Studios, artist-led education, and major festivals are simultaneously rebuilding pathways and visibility.
