Aksarben Sinkhole Swallows Cars

On a Tuesday afternoon in Omaha’s Aksarben area, a large sinkhole suddenly opened at Pacific Street and 67th, swallowing an SUV and a pickup truck as they waited at a traffic light. University of Nebraska–Omaha security cameras and other surveillance video captured the dramatic collapse and rescue response, while photos and eyewitness accounts spread widely. Omaha Police, the city engineer, and other officials issued safety updates, closed Pacific between 66th and 69th streets, and outlined repair plans. At the same time, Omaha Public Works and the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) offered conflicting explanations over whether a broken water main or other infrastructure issues caused the sinkhole, raising broader concerns about utility and road maintenance.
