Catching Surplus and Position-Player Roster Evaluation

Four catchers remain on the 40-man roster. Bernal’s strong September and Marmol’s endorsement strengthen his case for a larger role, and a recent three-run homer is a small positive signal, but Bloom cautions that his .284/.333/.474 line came in only 24 games. Herrera, Pages, Crooks, and Rainiel Rodriguez remain in the picture; reported plans to explore catcher deals are not evidence of active talks or a decision to trade Herrera.
