Cal’s rough football debut contrasts with soccer, water-polo results and wider program developments

Cal lost 45–24 to UCLA in Tosh Lupoi’s debut, but soccer and water polo supplied positive results, including a 4–0 start for No. 4 men’s water polo. The Sept. 12 Virginia Tech kickoff and broadcast details are now a near-term football item; Cal field hockey’s No. 20 ranking and difficult Virginia trip add secondary competition context. Basketball’s USC, Vanderbilt and Houston games, recruiting momentum and athlete-benefits litigation remain broader developments.
